Nasarawa State University, Keffi, finds itself enveloped in a somber atmosphere as the entire institution mourns the untimely and tragic loss of two of its cherished students amidst the chaotic circumstances that unfolded during the distribution of much-awaited government-provided palliatives. This heartbreaking incident has cast a shadow over the campus, leaving the university community grappling with shock and grief.
The sequence of events leading to this devastating outcome began with the arrival of palliative supplies, primarily comprising rice, on campus on March 20th, 2024. The anticipation among students was palpable as news of the impending distribution, facilitated by the Nasarawa State Government in collaboration with the Students Union Government (SUG) of the university, spread like wildfire across campus corridors and student dormitories.
Efforts were made by university authorities and student representatives to ensure smooth and orderly proceedings. Information regarding the distribution arrangements was disseminated to students well in advance, with Friday, March 22nd, 2024, earmarked as the designated day for the distribution exercise. However, the situation took an unforeseen turn, plunging the campus into chaos and tragedy.
Thursday, March 21st, 2024, saw students converging at the convocation arena from the early hours of the morning, eager to receive their share of the much-needed provisions. As the day progressed, the gathering swelled in size, with students patiently awaiting their turn in the distribution queue. However, as the clock approached 9 am, the scheduled commencement time for the screening process, tensions began to escalate amidst the throng of eager beneficiaries.
In the midst of the growing crowd, tempers flared, and frustrations boiled over, leading to a breakdown in law and order. The sheer magnitude of the crowd overwhelmed the security measures in place, resulting in a surge towards the distribution arena. Tragically, amidst the chaos and confusion, a stampede ensued, claiming the lives of two students and leaving a trail of injuries in its wake. Reports indicate that 23 other students sustained varying degrees of injuries during the harrowing ordeal.
The aftermath of this calamitous event has left the entire NSUK community reeling with shock and disbelief. University management swiftly moved to restore order and launch a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Calls for calm resonated across campus as students, faculty, and staff alike grappled with the enormity of the tragedy.
